My journey began when I went for a regular check-up at the doctors. The doctor got me to hop on the scales, the arrow went back and forth before stopping and resting on the 150kgs mark. My heart skipped a beat as I thought to myself, “I knew I was fat, but not that fat”. The doctor looked up at me, shaking his head; he had seen me go from a fit healthy child to an obese young adult. He sat me down and proceeded then to tell me the risks associated with being this heavy. Did I really want all this?? Heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol? I would struggle to do anything; I was stuck in a routine of doing nothing and I needed help fast. So that was it! I finally decided – enough is enough. So I set out to start my new journey!
I joined a local gym where some mates worked and started on my way. I went in for my initial fitness assessment and I was shown through my program which I started to complete on my own; however, after a few weeks went by I was losing motivation quickly! I was nearly ready to give it all up, when one of my mates told me about the benefits of having a personal trainer. I knew that I didn’t want to quit so I decided to give it a go, and got started with my trainer Luke twice a week, and completed extra sessions he set out for me on my own at the gym. He had me doing things I didn’t think someone my size could even dream of doing – boxing, running, pushups and situps. Thinking back now, I don’t know how I did it all but I had the determination and the encouragement I needed to push through it with the help of my trainer. As the weeks went by the weight just started to drop off! The mixture of having a personal trainer and a new healthy eating program was doing wonders! So I started to set some small goals, 10kgs at a time, to help push me along the way, all the while keeping my main goal in the back of my mind.
I lost a total of 60kgs in 14 weeks! I’ve kept the weight off for over 2 years with regular exercise, healthy eating and looking after myself. The best advice I can give to anyone is don’t ever give up, no matter how big the challenge: when you stick to something and put the effort in you can achieve anything. So get out there and get active, walk to work, ride a bike, play with the kids – whatever it is – just don’t sit around because things are too hard!
