Personal Training for Weight Loss: How Many Sessions Do You Actually Need?
For weight loss, most people do best with two to three strength training sessions a week with a coach, combined with daily walking and a way of eating they can keep up for months, not weeks. More sessions are not always better. What matters is how consistently you train, how well you recover, and what happens in the other 165 hours of the week.
At Revolution Personal Training in South Melbourne we help people lose fat and keep it off by building strength first. Here is how many sessions you actually need, and why.
How many personal training sessions a week for weight loss?
Two sessions a week is enough to make real progress, and three is ideal if your schedule and recovery allow it. With two sessions you can train the whole body each time and still recover well. A third session adds training volume and gives you another touchpoint with your coach, which helps with consistency. Beyond three, extra hard sessions tend to add fatigue faster than they add results for most people starting out.
If one-on-one three times a week is outside your budget, combine formats. One private or semi-private session a week to progress your program, plus group sessions in between, gives you coaching and frequency without the cost of three private sessions.
Why strength training matters for weight loss
Strength training helps you keep, and build, muscle while you lose fat, which is what changes how you look and feel. When people diet without resistance training, a meaningful part of the weight they lose can be muscle. Keeping muscle supports your metabolism, your strength for daily life, and the shape you are working towards.
Lifting also gives you goals beyond the scales. Adding weight to a squat or doing your first full push-up keeps you motivated during the weeks when the scales do not move.
What else do you need besides training sessions?
Your sessions are the anchor, but most of the result comes from habits outside the studio:
- Daily movement. Walking most days adds up to more energy use across a week than an extra workout, and it does not interfere with recovery.
- Nutrition you can sustain. A modest, steady approach with enough protein beats strict plans that last a fortnight.
- Sleep. Poor sleep makes hunger harder to manage and training harder to recover from.
- Accountability. Booked sessions with a coach who notices when you miss one are often the difference between starting and finishing.
What does a weight loss training week look like?
A typical week for a member training for fat loss at our studio looks like this:
- Monday: semi-private or personal training session, full-body strength.
- Tuesday: a 30 to 45 minute walk, ideally outdoors around Albert Park Lake or the bay.
- Wednesday: group training session for conditioning and strength.
- Thursday: walk and an early night.
- Friday or Saturday: second strength session, progressing the weights from Monday.
- Sunday: rest, or an easy walk with family or friends.
That is two or three coached sessions and daily movement, which is realistic for most busy people in South Melbourne and leaves enough recovery to keep progressing month after month.
How long until you see results?
Most people notice they feel stronger and more energetic within a few weeks, and see measurable changes in body composition within two to three months of consistent training and eating. Results vary from person to person, so we track more than body weight: strength, measurements and how your clothes fit tell a fuller story. If you have a health condition that affects your weight, an accredited exercise physiologist can build a program around it.
Which training option suits a weight loss goal?
Semi-private coaching is the best fit for most weight loss goals because it combines a personal program with the energy of training alongside a few others, from $65 a week. Bronze, at $109 a week, pairs one semi-private session with unlimited group training, so you can train three or more times a week with a coach in the room. One-on-one personal training, from $159 a week, suits people who want maximum attention or need careful progression around an injury. Full prices are in our South Melbourne price guide.

Most people then continue on Bronze at $109 a week or Silver at $149 a week. We are at 17A Market Street, South Melbourne, open from 5:30am on weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
Is personal training good for weight loss?
Yes. Personal training gives you a structured strength program, accountability and coaching on technique, which together make it easier to keep training long enough to lose fat and keep it off.
Can I lose weight with two sessions a week?
Yes. Two strength sessions a week, combined with daily walking and sustainable nutrition, is enough for most people to make steady progress.
Should I do cardio or weights for weight loss?
Do both, but prioritise strength training. Weights help you keep muscle while you lose fat, and walking or other cardio adds energy use without affecting recovery much.
